While Roanoke may not be the main Virginia Tech campus, ​RGSA's Wellness Chair and the Health Science and Technology (HS&T) campus Wellness Team work to provide and communicate the wellness resources available to Roanoke-based VT students. We are always open to ideas for wellness resources and events – email the RGSA Wellness Chair if there is something you would like to see added to this list!

Mental health resources

• Mental health counseling services are provided at no cost to Roanoke-based VT students by Dr. Jennifer Slusher (jslusher@vt.edu), available 5 days a week on the 2nd floor of Riverside 1 (Room 204). Counseling is included in your student fees. The Cook Counseling Center, based in Blacksburg, is also available to Roanoke students. You can call the Cook Counseling Center at 540-231-6557 to set up an appointment. Virginia Tech has a new partnership with TimelyCare, a virtual platform for student wellness and support, that you can access through Cook Counseling.

• Psychiatry services are available through Dr. Joe Frieban, a psychiatrist from Cook Counseling who is available every Monday from 8 am – 5 pm in Riverside 1. Contact the counselor Dr. Jennifer Slusher (see above, jslusher@vt.edu) to set up an appointment. 

​

• The HS&T campus Wellness Team works hard to serve the students in Roanoke, including a "Wellness Weekly" email that details all of the upcoming wellness events and available resources. Sign up to receive the Wellness Weekly by subscribing HERE. Additionally, the Wellness Team has a rotation of wellness-related events throughout the semester (all communicated in the Wellness Weekly as well!) that can be viewed on their calendar, which you can access HERE.

• Keeper the Service Dog is a loveable yellow lab whose job is to visit us at the Roanoke campus and provide students, faculty, and staff with animal love! You can find Keeper from noon to 2 PM on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of each month in the FBRI library (R4) and on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each month in the VTCSOM library (R2). Stop by and give Keeper some cuddles!

• The Riverside 2 Wellness Room (room M216 in R2) is a relaxing place for all FBRI employees and students. Amenities include a massage chair and nap pod. You MUST reserve a spot in the wellness room to use it (reserve a spot HERE - log in first with your VT PID, and then you should be directed to the right page).

​

• The Riverside 1 Center for Inclusion (room 205B in R1) is designed to be an inviting and inclusive space for everyone on the Roanoke campus. It’s a great place to have meetings or gatherings, host discussions, utilize resources, or just enjoy some quiet time between classes and research. To reserve the space, add the Center for Inclusion calendar to your Google account (add by clicking HERE), then create an event to reserve the space.

Physical health resources

• Carilion Clinic student health services (including primary care) are located at 1229 3rd St SW (in Carilion Clinic Community Care), a mile from the HS&T campus. Call 540-512-5200 to schedule an appointment. Click HERE for more details about providers, services, and insurance information.

• The Riverside 2 Gym (room M219 in R2) is open to all FBRI employees and students. This gym has 2 Pelotons, 2 treadmills, 2 ellipticals, and a variety of free weights, as well as shower facilities and a locker room. Currently, occupancy is capped at 4 people, and masks are encouraged. You MUST reserve a spot in the gym to use it (reserve a spot HERE). If your Carilion badge needs access to the second floor of R2 to access the gym, reach out to Brent Bowden (bmbowden@vt.edu).

• The Carilion Wellness Gym is a larger gym service accessible at no cost to Roanoke students and Carilion faculty & staff. This gym is located at 4508 Starkey Rd, Roanoke, VA 24018. Read more about their equipment, class schedules, and swimming pool HERE.
